CO-COUNSEL Dick Byl Law Corporation
A class action lawsuit about the July 8, 2020, fire at the Econo Lodge City Centre Inn, 910 Victoria St, Prince George, BC (“Econo Lodge”) has settled for a total of $5.25 million.
Class counsel will be seeking court orders approving the settlements, as well as a plan for distributing the money to class members (called a “distribution protocol”) on July 30, 2026, at the Prince George courthouse (250 George Street Prince George, BC V2L 5S2).
If these settlements are approved, you may receive compensation and you will not be able to start your own lawsuit for your own losses from the fire if you are a Class Member.
You may be a Class Member if:
- You were a registered guest at the Econo Lodge on July 8, 2020;
- You were present at the Econo Lodge on July 8, 2020 at the time of the fire;
- You were present at Yolks All Day Family Restaurant on July 8, 2020 at the time of the fire; or
- You are a family member of one of the victims who died in the fire.
If you believe you are a Class Member and you have NOT spoken to Class Counsel, you must do so on or before June 3, 2026. Email [email protected] or call 604-689-7555 with the following information: (i) your full name, (ii) your address, (iii) your telephone number, (iv) the basis for being a Class Member; and (v) a description of your losses caused by the Fire.
The distribution protocol has a claims deadline of June 3, 2026. If the Court approves the distribution protocol, you must provide Class Counsel with the information above before June 3, 2026, otherwise any claim you have regarding the fire will be released and you will NOT be compensated. You can read the proposed distribution protocol under “Documents”.
CFM Lawyers LLP and Dick Byl Law Corporation represent Class Members. The law firms are seeking approval of a joint fee of up to 33 and 1/3% of the net settlement proceeds, plus disbursements, which are estimated to be approximately $200,000, and taxes. They will also be seeking an honorarium for the representative plaintiff of $5,000 to be paid from the settlement amount.
You have a right to support or object to the settlements and distribution protocol. You also have a right to support or object to class counsel fees. You can provide your comments to class counsel, who will provide them to the court. You can also attend court on July 30, 2026, to provide your comments directly to the judge.
If you would like to comment on the settlements, the lawyers’ fees, or the distribution protocol, you must contact Class Counsel on or before July 16, 2026.
