Vancouver College and St. Thomas More Christian Brothers Abuse Class Action
Summary
This action arises from physical and sexual abuse of children perpetrated by current or former members of the Christian Brothers in Canada (the “CBIC”) at two Vancouver area Catholic schools, Vancouver College and St. Thomas More, over the Class Period.
Recent Developments
- We’ve completed the materials required to seek certification of the case as a class action.
- On September 9, 2021 we held a Judicial Management Conference with the defendants.
- As a result of that conference, the judge scheduled a seven-day hearing on certification in August 2022.
- At the hearing, Vancouver College took the position that it is should get more time to formally respond to the lawsuit because victims waited 40 years to come forward to make a claim. We want to be clear: there is no limitation period in British Columbia for bringing a claim for physical or sexual abuse endured as a minor. This is because the law recognizes that survivors of trauma need time to process what happened and to make their own decision about whether and how to pursue justice in court.
